EPHF Lab

The Aviation Psychology Laboratory is the predecessor of the Engineering Psychology and Human Factors Laboratory, Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Engaged in the aviation/aerospace psychology research since the 1950s, our lab had undertaken a lot of projects related to aircraft cabin lighting, psychological selection of pilot and astronaut. Results have won the the second- class award of Army Science and Technology Progress Award and the first-class award of National Science and Technology Progress Award as the second unit.

After 1990s, we are the first in China beginning researches of human-computer interaction by Chinese interface, providing the evaluation index and the improvement suggestions for the input methods and keyboard design from the point of view of stimulus - response compatibility, focusing on the character input. In recent years, we focus on the questions of human factors in the field of public safety, such as driving state monitoring, accident proneness measurement, the design of traffic signs/evacuation signs, situational awareness measurement of pilot/air traffic controller, and the efficiency of airport security check. These researches provide the theoretical basis of engineering psychology for the development of high-tech system, by revealing mental process and information processing mechanisms under complex information environment, such as spatial cognition, visual search, working memory, and by proposing cognitive processing model for specific operations.

Our Laboratory carry outs extensive interdisciplinary researches by cooperating with many domestic and foreign research institutions, such as Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of safety Science and technology, Beijing Research Center of Urban System Engineering, Honeywell Lab and CBS. The following research equipments are open to public use: Tobii eye movement recorder and analyzer, Kangfei KF2 portable physiological detector, behavioral observation rooms, driving simulation system and so on.
